CURRENT IN FASHION, LIBERTY ROSS
Originally filmed before the onslaught of the 'fashion month' back at the beginning of February, this week's addition to our In Fashion interview series is Liberty Ross. Star of numerous international campaigns, catwalk fixture and guest editor of British Vogue, Ross spoke with Fashion Director Alex Fury about her illustrious and unique career to date in this exclusive one-on-one. COMING UP OBJECT FETISH
Next week, we launch Object Fetish, a film series focussing almost unhealthy attention onto single objects of desire from the international mens and women's collections. Not content with merely charting fashion's forthcoming must-haves and sell-outs for A/W 2010, this film series rips them apart at the seam to examine the meaning within - our first filming training your gaze solely onto Prada's knee-high socks and leather loafers, and unpicking their aesthetic heritage. It's never just about clothes.

FROM THE SHOP FEATHERED, 2009
As the latest Shop exhibition 'Headdress' draws to a close, the wintry weather seems to be following. With a sun-drenched spring well underway, the inspirational milliner Stephen Jones, as always, has the perfect titfer for every season. Walking a line between headpiece and hairpiece, this feathered periwig, festooned with silk roses, seems perfect summary of the summery mood. The sartorial equivalent of Pimms and Lemonade, shall we say? [more]
FROM THE ARCHIVE FIRE | |
With footage of the monumental eruption of the volcano Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland continuing to dominate news, our minds were set to thoughts of disaster, and the odd beauty often found in destruction. Simply titled 'Fire', Brian Dowling's photo-essay documenting the aftermath of a 2000 fire in his seventy-four year old mother's home seems a fitting, and somewhat sober, reflection on destruction and devastation, albeit this time man-made (stray wiring in a television set, for the record). This personal project, showcases a selection of snapshot images - something of an aide memoir and memorial to the home his mother lost - alongside a reflective essay by journalist Paul Hunwick. Pressed for time All seems to have gone quiet on the press day front from me - but, trust me, it isn't for want of product! Indeed, it's been a veritable onslaught over the past week or so, with my weary little legs racing around eight in a single day - although that... [more]

COMING UP LIVESTUDIO - SHYSTIE
The illustrious milliner Nasir Mazhar and renowned grime MC Shystie are combining their talents for a SHOWstudio.com LiveStudio event this Thursday, 15 April 2010 at 16:00 BST. Incorporating one of this season’s celebrated headpieces into the ensemble, Mazhar will style Shystie from head-to-toe minutes before the dynamic MC takes to the mic to execute two of her newest songs. With Mazhar's gravity defying styling, Shystie's militant music will quite literally take on a whole new dimension.
FROM THE SHOP ORB, 2009 | |
Whilst the moon orbits the earth, it seems that milliner and Fashion East highlight Nasir Mazhar orbits the stars - embellishing and styling celebrities with his structural head pieces. Mazhar has been a hit with the likes of Lady Gaga, Madonna and now MC Shystie who will be styled for a Live Studio event this Thursday (see above). A sneak preview, perhaps, of what's to come tomorrow, his Orb headdress, featured in our exhibition of the same name, is the latest millinery gem circling the head of Ms Gaga. Evidently, it's time to be brass and join the magical stratosphere of millinery. [more]

CURRENT IN FASHION, MARIAN NEWMAN
Caught back in January before the month-long onslaught of the Autumn/Winter collections, the world-renowned manicurist Marian Newman is the latest addition to our In Fashion interview series. Discussing everything from her unexpected background in forensic science, to her first collaborations with household names including Nick Knight and Alexander McQueen, to her feelings on the nude-buff-French tip mani-pedi stalwarts (versus her own Kabuki creations), this profile expresses just a slither of the passion and dedication Newman devotes to her perfectionist craft. God really in in the details. [more]
COMING UP IN FASHION, SAM MCKNIGHT - LIVE
It's a veritable beauty bonanza this week! As Marian Newman's profile launches, we turn our attention to leading hairstylist Sam McKnight, live streaming his in-depth one-on-one interview with esteemed fashion journalist Tim Blanks from 11.30 GMT on Friday 9 April. Next week, we've already lined up Canadian-born London-based designer Erdem for the In Fashion treatment. He will be interviewed by Fashion Director Alex Fury mere days after the exciting announcement that he will receive British Vogue's first Fashion Fund award of £200k
FROM THE SHOP HEAD WITH CIGARETTE, 2008
With the 'Headdress' show nearing the end of its run, it feels apt to address not just the 'dress', but the 'head' itself. This cranial papier maché creation was hand-crafted by esteemed art director Shona Heath and showcased in Paolo Roversi's editorial for the Spring/Summer 2008 issue of AnOther Magazine. Complete with a smoked cigarette between her ruby-red lips, this starry eyed sculpture is a perfectly fresh faced portrait of spring. [more]
FROM THE ARCHIVE POLITICAL FASHION
The polls are in! Well, almost, as the 2010 General Election here in the UK has been announced for 6 May. Its a fitting moment therefore to examine our own fashionable articulation of the political power struggle in our 2008 Political Fashion film season. Inspired by Nick Knight's belief that fashion is intrinsically political, contributors to this multi-layered motion image project include Steven Klein, Gareth Pugh, Vivienne Westwood and Stefano Pilati for Yves Saint Laurent.
