COMING UP IN YOUR FACE: HAROLD OFFEH AND ELOISE CALANDRE
This Friday 3 February 2012 sees the latest in our live series of performances in conjunction with the SHOWstudio Shop exhibition In Your Face. Contemporary artists Harold Offeh and Eloise Calandre collaborate to explore concepts of portraiture and its capacity to challenge and provoke in a series of three one-off performances, throughout the day. The first, from 13:00 GMT is titled Smile, playing with the concept of this gesture of friendship and approval and transforming it to a painful endurance test. Building on this provocative theme, the second performance from 15:00 GMT explores the potentials and possibilities of facial expression, using Calandre's face as a screen for a re-projection of her face. For the final performance, broadcast from 17:00 GMT, Offeh will add to his existing body of work Covers, currently on show as part of In Your Face, recreating the cover of The Rolling Stones' Exile On Main Street by appearing as '3Ball Charlie', a thirties freakshow performer. By using the primary mediums of popular culture - photography and video - Offeh and Calandre's performances will explore portraiture in a new way, unravelling complex ideas of race, identity and desire. Tune in on Friday 3 February 2012 at 13:00 GMT, 15:00 GMT and 17:00 GMT to see these unique performance pieces live and direct.


CURRENT DEATH CAMP


The latest offering of filmmaker and photographer Joseph Lally can now be viewed exclusively on SHOWstudio. Entitled Death Camp, Lally describes the work as 'a controversial film which states that Earth is being transformed into a death camp. That culture, humanity, nature, art and democracy are near extinction.' Naturally, the film takes a pessimistic, dark tone offering a glimpse into the problems of modern life and the depravity of mankind. Taking inspiration from the visuals of Jean Luc Godard and the writings of Bernard-Henri Lévy, Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag, Death Camp explores topics as varied as race, gender, drug use, violence and sexual exploitation. The film rejects a conventional narrative, instead relying on visuals, sound and dialogue to create a vision of the world as a death camp, where everything and everyone is doomed. [more]


CURRENT DESIGN_DOWNLOAD: STEPHEN JONES


Milliner Stephen Jones is the latest master creative to offer up a pattern for SHOWstudio's Design_Download series. The series allow readers a unique opportunity to create their own version of fashion masterpieces - so get creative and send your submissions in to our gallery. This is the first time that Jones has offered a pattern for download, allowing the public at large an insight into the visionary creative behind the hats for labels such as Comme des Garçons, Giles Deacon and Marc Jacobs. This is a 'cut and sew' creation that requires no specialist millinery materials or training to realise its stunning form - once you've crafted your own work of millinery art submit your images via email - design_download@showstudio.com - or via Twitter tagged #design_download for a chance to be featured on-site in the SHOWstudio Submissions Gallery. CURRENT VISIONS COUTURE


Today is the final deadline to contribute your images to Visions Couture and be a part of Nick Knight's grand designs for the fashion vitrines of Le Printemps Paris. A collaboration between SHOWstudio, Nick Knight and Daphne Guinness, the windows will fuse art, interactivity, fashion film and of course the garments themselves, from Paco Rabanne, Gareth Pugh, Maison Martin Margiela, Rick Owens and Junya Watanabe. Viewer images, grouped around the five major themes inspiring the Visions Couture visual treatments - Dark Knight, Flora, House and Garden, Death Becomes Her and Nature at Night - form a vital part of the specially-devised interactives by multimedia designer Daniel Brown, each featuring in a different window. CURRENT FASHION MIX


Our Fashion Mix series boasts two fantastic, if vastly different, playlists this week. Monday saw a motivational mix from top-model Freja Beha Erichsen, with plenty of girl power from the likes of PJ Harvey. On Friday art director and set designer Simon Costin will drop an equally inspiring set of tracks live on SHOWstudio. Stay tuned on Friday at 13:00 GMT for your latest batch of super stylish sounds. CURRENT BEHIND THE SEAMS: HOLY GHOSTS


In our first Behind The Seams article of 2012, SHOWstudio contributing fashion journalist Stephanie LaCava examines the idea of fashion as religion: but rather than shopping as religious experience, LaCava unravels the religious references that abound in the latest crop of shows. Balenciaga is key - after all, his couture maison was the closest to a chapel, so it's fitting that the contemporary inheritor of his heavy mantle, Nicolas Ghesquiere, is the lynchpin of this exploration. Unpicking a veritable litany of Spring/Summer 2012 collections - namely the aforementioned Balenciaga alongside Rei Kawakubo's Comme Des Garçons and Rick Owens - LaCava examines the 'Holy Ghosts' that continue to inspire so much of fashion today. FROM THE SHOP COVERS, AFTER FUNKADELIC, MAGGOT BRAIN, 1971, 2009


Harold Offeh’s work fuses together familiar cultural references, found footage and often his own image to create pieces playing with race, identity and expression. In his Covers series, Offeh recreates three musical album covers; Grace Jones, Island Life, 1985, The Ohio Players, Honey, 1975 and Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain, 1971, placing himself as the subject. By recreating and reapproproating these iconic covers - the title itself a reference to the musical tradition of the 'cover', where a band offers their own rendition of another's greatest hits - Offeh transforms a static image which defined a collection of music into a durational performance which he himself controls. Playing with humour and expectation each of the series gives Offeh a new platform to speak through other’s images and our own expectations. FROM THE ARCHIVE DESIGN_DOWNLOAD: JOHN GALLIANO


Our eighth Design_Download comes from Stephen Jones - a long-time collaborator of British designer John Galliano - who, incidentally, contributed the second of our downloads back in June 2003. Galliano's pattern is still available today, offering the public the chance to unravel Galliano's fiendishly complex 'Pirate' jacket - an exclusive Galliano design that first appeared on the catwalk in his Autumn/Winter 2001 Techno-Romance collection. Deceptively deconstructed, the jacket appears to be held together by sail rivets, buckles and ties, but in actual fact is a complex example of corsetry, skilled tailoring and the Couture workmanship that have defined Galliano's ground-breaking contribution to contemporary fashion. The eighth pattern in our Design_Download series celebrates the seemingly endless creativity, wit and invention of master milliner Stephen Jones. A leading figure in international fashion for three decades, Jones' work has garnered international acclaim ever since his graduation from Central Saint Martins in 1979. For SHOWstudio, Jones contributed a piece that epitomises the seemingly contradictory qualities of whimsical fantasy, stunning technique and unexpected practicality that characterise his work. A 'cut and sew' creation that requires no specialist millinery materials or training to realise its stunning form, Jones' hat is an exaggeration on the classic beret. Inspired by his own lilac hatboxes and drawn from his Autumn/Winter 2011 own-label collection, Jones titles this tour de force of millinery invention Nice Package. CURRENT VISIONS COUTURE


Le Printemps, Paris offers their take on the Spring/Summer 2012 collections, interpreting the theme of 'Visions Couture' in a ground-breaking collaboration with Nick Knight, Daphne Guinness and SHOWstudio. Ahead of the unveiling of the final vitrines in February, from 18:00 GMT/10:00 PST on 27-28 January 2012 we re-stream the entire real-time footage of this extraordinary two-day shoot, starring Guinness in a selection of exceptional pieces from Paco Rabanne, Gareth Pugh, Maison Martin Margiela, Rick Owens and Junya Watanabe. Hopefully this will be grist to the inspirational mill, as your picture submissions are a vital element of the project's final realisation. COMING UP DEATH CAMP


'The history of our planet is one of a death camp. The planet history is one of violence, corruption and conspiracy.' so states photographer and filmmaker Joseph Lally, whose new film Death Camp takes a dark, morbid tone exploring the depravity of modern existence and the failure of humankind. Inspired by the visuals of Jean Luc Godard and the writings of Bernard-Henri Lévy, Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag, Death Camp features a mix of vintage footage and new material As with Lally's previous films the piece eschews a conventional narrative, instead relying on sound and striking visuals to create a vision of the world as a death camp, covering topics as varied as race, gender, drug use, violence and sexual exploitation. Death Camp launches on SHOWstudio on Monday 30 January 2012 at 17.00 GMT/10.00 EST


FROM THE SHOP SAUNA FACES, 2011


In his debut series of drawings Sauna Faces London based artist Stephen Doherty creates an intriguing and emotive set of characters against coloured paper. Drawing from people he has met and imagined Sauna Faces are touchingly intimate portraits of gay sauna goers. Doherty utilises each anecdotally named character, from Rotund Diva to Drunk Kiss, to explore the spectrum of emotions felt within a sauna. From first timers to regular and one off users, Sauna Faces brings together the common feelings Doherty feels must be shared by these men. The loneliness, hope, and vulnerability bring together each face to reflect to the viewer Doherty’s viewpoint of their surroundings which are so rarely explored. [more]

Last year the haute couture collections had a decidedly Asian theme, prominent not only in an influx of new Far Eastern clients but in the pastel embroidery and luxurious silks that inspired fashion's finest. To celebrate this Nick Knight shot Shanghai-born model Ming Xi in a selection of the most covetable creations from Spring/Summer 2011 exclusively for V magazine. As this season's couture shows draw to a close, revisit the hits of last year's collections including Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel and John Galliano for Christian Dior. COMING UP POWER DRESSING


From 22-23 January 2011, model Lara Stone and stylist Carine Roitfeld collaborate with Nick Knight for Power Dressing, a live fashion shoot with a difference inspired by the notion of combining self-defence with high-fashion. Specifically for this shoot, Stone trained in Krav Maga, a system developed by the Israeli Defence Forces, and is captured in a series of scenarios defending herself whilst modelling Rotifeld's choice of Spring/Summer 2012 fashion for V Magazine. The entire shoot will be streamed live, so tune in on Sunday and Monday to see all the action from the set.


CURRENT COLLECTIONS: MILAN AND PARIS MENSWEAR A/W 2012


Designers have unveiled their first Collections for Autumn/Winter 2012 - for men that is, albeit a glimpse into the moment that usually heralds a few clues for the womenswear offerings to be unveiled in a month's time. Pitti Immagine was the first, giving us a new vision of the Valentino man, quickly followed by a veritable designer deluge in Milan, with Dolce e Gabbana, Jil Sander, Prada and Versace offering visions from La Scala opulence through Modernist tailoring to serial killer chic. Paris is the next stop, with SHOWstudio Contributing fashion journalist Hywel Davies, who will be reporting live from Paris covering the likes of Yohji Yamamoto, Dior Homme, Lanvin, Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent alongside live image uploads from the NOWFASHION team. CURRENT IN YOUR FACE: MUSIC GARY NUMAN


Legendary singer and songwriter and one of the original pioneers of electronic music, Gary Numan accepted SHOWstudio's invitation to perform a stripped-back, intimate and entirely personal set. Streamed live on SHOWstudio, Numan's performance is now available on-demand as a part of our In Your Face: Music series. This Monday's Fashion Mix offers a playlist by one of the most provocative figures in fine art today - Chinese-Canadian artist Terence Koh. Better known as 'asianpunkboy' and a frequent follower and collaborator with high fashion figures, Koh provides SHOWstudio and our viewers with a list of his top ten tracks. Ending the week will be the English model and actress Lily Cole's playlist, launching this Friday at 13:00 GMT, offering a song selection from the past half-century of rock music including Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac and Bon Iver. FROM THE SHOP ANY LAST THOUGHTS?, 2010


SHOWstudio Shop mixed the black humour of duo littlewhitehead into our In Your Face exhibition with their daring and dark 2010 sculpture Any Last Thoughts?. littlewhitehead draw from their experience of working class, post industrial Glasgow in collaborative mixed media sculptures of life sized figures. Their piece visually explores the feeling of increasingly normalised violence as a tool of communal identity, drawing together people and places under the same darkly comic flag. With a wish to 'beat you up visually,' littlewhitehead creates a scene of amusement by drawing fragments of our darkest fears into the light. Any Last Thoughts? brings violence and crime teasingly close to the viewer to unnerve, alarm and darkly amuse. [more]


FROM THE ARCHIVE NAOMI CAMPBELL: STATUESQUE


Three-dimensional fashion photography - or fashion sculpture, as it can be more pithily dubbed - is the centrepiece of Nick Knight's Visions Couture concept for the vitrines of Le Printemps, Paris. But it was also the centrepiece of SHOWstudio: Fashion Revolution back in 2009, courtesy of a monolithic sculpture of supermodel Naomi Campell, a triple-exposed photograph rendered in three dimensions, and thirty or so feet high. Inviting viewers to utilise Naomi's body as a conduit for global communication, exhibition goers and online viewers alike were able to 'graffiti' across her with projected light, while microphones placed in and around her body picked up visitors' audio responses and broadcast them worldwide. Our project Naomi Campbell: Statuesque documents both the final installation - showcasing a ten-minute extract of over three hours of footage captured over the three-month exhibition run, alongside a tour narrated by Nick Knight of the exhibit itself - and also the all-important process behind scanning Naomi in three-dimensions and recreating this Supermodel, super-sized. On Saturday the action shifts to Milan, with fashion powerhouses Prada, Armani, Gucci and Versace all plying their wares for modish menfolk to consider, covet, and ultimately lay down cold hard cash for. FROM THE SHOP ANDROGYNY (SIX MEN + SIX WOMEN), 1982


Nancy Burson has created provocative insights into race, beauty and identity by pioneering the cohesion of art and science. Working with MIT engineers during the 1980’s to create photo composites which 'morphed' together faces, her work questions the make up of humanity as well as it's unity. Mankind gives a portrait made up the percentages of different races in the population, in an attempt to create an actual picture of our population's face, whereas Androgyny brings together the faces of six men and six women to represent a hybrid face of the sexes. Together this haunting series wonderfully questions the ability of one image or statistic to reflect the true nature of the world’s population. [more]

Erin O'Connor strikes a pose Today our studio was graced with a true fashion legend - British supermodel Erin O'Connor, here preened by hairstylist Christian Wood and laced into a rather formidable Rigby and Peller corset. The reason for this shoot is under wraps for the moment, but the final images (and project) will be released during the spring 2012 haute couture season in Paris later this month. Terribly appropriate, given Erin's truly couture-worthy poise... [more]

A hint of stocking, and something shocking... Despite her late night on Friday's NEWGEN//TEN shoot, the indefatigable Karlie Kloss is in front of the camera once again today, recording a fashion film with director Ruth Hogben to be released later this year. We don't want to reveal too much about the theme - although a braided-leather whip and these faded roses offer a sly wink to the hint of kink underscoring proceedings. [more]

To celebrate a decade of fashion giant Topshop sponsoring the British Fashion Council's NEWGEN scheme - offering vital support to the next generation of young fashion talent - Nick Knight teams with Topshop creative director Kate Phelan to create a fashion film starring Karlie Kloss. The film itself will showcase Phelan's pick from ten years of Topshop collaborations, combining garments from the one-off ranges created by London talents including Marios Schwab, Meadham Kirchhoff, Mary Katrantzou and Christopher Kane into a unique synthesis representing the very best of London's stellar fashion decade 2002-2012. CURRENT MONSTER BALL


As a holiday gift from SHOWstudio to Lady Gaga fans worldwide, on Christmas Day, 25 December 2011 we were thrilled to release the latest addition to our Monster Ball video project - two unique interactives, devised around video imagery from The Monster Ball and released ahead of the final film to complete this unique film project. Created by interactive designer Daniel Brown and based exclusive 3-D scans of Lady Gaga (in those incredible Alexander McQueen armadillo heels and little else) by Kev Stenning of Rapido3D, these interactives allow you to explore a diamond-encrusted rendering of the Lady herself in three-dimensions. CURRENT MARRAKECH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

COMING UP COLLECTIONS: PITTI IMMAGINE AND MILAN MENSWEAR A/W 2012


The Italian leg of the international collections begins with a bang next week, as first Florence and then Milan play host to the fashion fraternity and unveil their designs on the world's menfolk for the coming Autumn/Winter 2012 season. Valentino is our first show - the fist menswear presentation from creative directors Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiurim opening the Florence show season. In Milan, meanwhile, the usual highlights - Burberry Prorsum, Jil Sander, Dolce e Gabbana and Prada, amongst many others. Join SHOWstudio fashion director Alexander Fury and the NOWFASHION photographic team as they report live and direct from fashion's front line.


FROM THE SHOP SENSE OF SPACE: WAKE, 2000


Collaborating through installation, performance, sculpture and photography since the mid 1980’s, the Gao Brothers have long tackled feelings of isolation, otherness and dispossession. In Wake, a piece from their Sense of Space series, the Gao Brothers confinement of their subjects physically within the half abandoned cupboards opens the viewer to the narrative of isolation and compartmentalisation. While there are numerous men in the composition none can speak to the other. But it is through this isolation that the Gao Brother's join them, making a more universal comment on how ultimately we are not alone. [more]


FROM THE ARCHIVE LYRIC


Kylie Minogue, Nick Rhodes, Bobby Gillespie and Julie Verhoeven were just some of the leading fashion, music and art creatives who came together for Lyric, a 2004 film project that broke new creative ground using the latest 'third generation' mobile-imaging technologies. Each contributor or creative pairing was asked to make a series of short films, or 'motion clips', that visually interpret the song lyrics of their choice - including Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love', Goldfrapp's 'Strict Machine' and Barry Manilow's 'Copacabana' - producing one clip for each lyric line. The films were recorded via a Motorola phone with video call facility on 3's video mobile network. [more]

When Nick Knight was approached to create installations to grace the windows of Paris' Le Printemps department store during February 2012 Paris Fashion Week, the first model that leapt to mind was Daphne Guinness - a living embodiment of Le Printemps' Spring/Summer theme of Future Couture. Watch our live broadcast over 21-22 December 2011 to witness every step of the process as Knight captures the Divine Daphne in creations by contemporary fashion's finest including Gareth Pugh, Rick Owens, Maison Martin Margiela, Junya Watanabe and Paco Rabanne. Captured on camera during Nick Knight's shoot for Vogue China in 2009, this film showcases an exclusive interview with Chinese actress, composer and philanthropist Maggie Cheung. Alongside fashion film of Cheung in creations from Balenciaga, Lanvin, Stella McCartney and Louis Vuitton, she discusses her life and work in an intimate and revealing video portrait, to be launched on SHOWstudio next week.


FROM THE SHOP FROM THE SERIES 'HAND-TAINTED POSTCARD', 2009


Creating a daring juxtaposition between the innocence and nostalgia of vintage postcards and artist Tim Shaw’s view of macho symbols and images from mass media today, Hand-Tainted Postcard merges two worlds both conceptually and visually. Using unexpected mediums in each work, these postcards marry traditional images with silicone, pornography and fish skin to give each piece a rich identity of excessive ambiguity and yet, because the work pulls from mainstream imagery, there is something seductively familiar about each portrait. FROM THE ARCHIVE BRING & BUY


Patti Smith, Yoko Ono, Tilda Swinton and Björk - these were just some of the names that donated garments to SHOWstudio's Bring & Buy in July 2005. All piece received were featured in a unique Nick Knight shoot for the October 2005 issue of i-D, starring the likes of Erin O’Connor, Naomi Campbell and Karolina Kurkova modelling unique fashions realised by an army of international stylists. The truly one-off clothes were then auctioned on eBay in aid of Oxfam - but our project profiles the entire process from receipt of the packages through to the shoot itself, captured on fashion film by Nick Knight and edited by Ruth Hogben. FROM THE SHOP IDOLS, 2011


Fraser Hamilton's Idols collection uses monumental, sculptural and statuesque archetypes as - monoliths, totem poles, obelisks and heads, hands and busts - miniaturised into jewellery, hence subverting their inherent stature. Some items are upturned into personal idols while others adapt to the body treating it as a sort of sculpture park; figures recline on fingers, pendants with limbs and earrings with heads reach in bosoms or whisper into ears. These one-off pieces have been carved out of a solid block of wax, cast in bronze, and then plated in gold and silver. Each transformed element treats the body as a playground attempting to narrate its object status or stand tall as a monumental idol - uniquely designed for women or men who enjoy making a statement. FROM THE ARCHIVE DESIGN_DOWNLOAD: ALEXANDER MCQUEEN


With a new Design_Download set to launch later this month, it felt fitting (pardon the pun) to chose a piece from our existing archive of exclusive one-off designer pieces. From one of the world's foremost fashion designers came the third in our series of downloadable garments - Alexander McQueen allows us to examine and assemble his pattern for a beautiful kimono-inspired jacket from the Autumn/Winter 2003 collection. The brutally sharp tailoring, for which this label is synonymous, is seen in the jacket’s strong linear construction and carefully layered fabric sections. A collision of Western Victoriana and Eastern traditional dress, this garment, like so much of McQueen’s work, references historical detailing, whilst remaining quintessentially modern. [more]

Amanda Harlech - Paris - 6th December 2011 Chanel's show date for its metiers d'art spirit of India, Paris - Bombay. The set at the Grand Palais is an elegant Moghul palace hung with chandeliers. A vast table piled with roses, tiers of fruits the colour of an 18c miniature, gilded glass and ropes of tuberoses. A silver train carrying decanters chugs around the perimeter of the table cloth. Karl has created his other world with genius set designer Stephen - alias Lulu. [more]

Marie Schuller - Second Interview in Marrakech: Roland Joffe SHOWstudio continues covering the Marrakech International Film Festival. The second interview of the day was held with legendary director Roland Joffé who told us in detail how he bribed his way into Cambodia with Coca Cola products prior to shooting his Oscar nominated film The Killing Fields in the country. COMING UP IN YOUR FACE
The latest exhibition to be staged in the SHOWstudio Shop space, In Your Face is a jolt to the senses, colliding agitprop pieces from the world of fashion, fine art and film. The title reveals a duality, a reference to confrontation and also the immediately and universally legible language of the portrait. CURRENT GARETH PUGH FOR M.A.C


A further development from Ruth Hogben and Gareth Pugh's electric collaboration for Spring/Summer 2012, this latest dark and edgy fashion film, showcasing Pugh's first foray into make-up for M.A.C Inspired by the contrast of black and white - or light and darkness - this film takes a fresh approach to the well-established tradition of cosmetic advertisement by showcasing the powder and pigment of the Pugh range in motion. Showcased online at SHOWstudio.com, a selection of signature, specially-fashioned faces for the twenty-first century, crafted with stylist Katie Shillingford and make-up maestro Val Garland, are captured for posterity by Hogben's lens in this unique fashion film. Held at the swish and savvy Savoy, the awards honoured the great and greater of Great British fashion. Keehnan Konyha - Versace at Home I: Casa Casuarina "Casa Casuarina was originally built in 1930 by Alden Freeman, an eccentric philanthropist, as an homage to the Alcázar de Colón, a mansion built in 1510 in Santo Domingo that was home to Christopher Columbus's son Diego. (Freeman named the house after the casuarina tree, an Australian breed that was standing on the site when Freeman began building.) Diego had been viceroy of the Indies, and his wife was related to the Spanish monarchs, so the original Alcázar de Colón had Moorish, Spanish, and Byzantine influences. [more]

Over Autumn 2011 Café Conversations invited a selection of the most intriguing, exciting and influential movers-and-shakers in the fashion and art world to pull up a chair for intimate one-on-one coffee and conversation. COMING UP GARETH PUGH FOR M.A.C


'Truly beautiful, very sophisticated, and incredibly chic' - those are fashion designer Gareth Pugh's own words to describe his first make-up range, created in collaboration with M.A.C. 'With an underlying edge of darkness and attitude' is his caveat, expressed to the fullest in his latest collaboration with fashion film director Ruth Hogben, a film designed to unveil the range to the public-at-large. Showcased on SHOWstudio from this Sunday 27 November 2011, this latest film takes a fresh approach to the well-established tradition of make-up advertisement by showcasing the powder and pigment of the Gareth Pugh for M.A.C range in motion: a selection of signature, specially-fashioned faces for the twenty-first century crafted with stylist Katie Shillingford and make-up artist Val Garland, and captured for posterity by Hogben's lens.

Taking the metamorphic potential of fashion imagery and following this through to an extreme, in July 2002 Nick Knight extended an invitation to friends and colleagues in the fashion, music and art worlds to participate in Transformer, a SHOWstudio project that challenged each to devise an act of transformation that held personal significance for them. The entire progress of this one-off two-day shoot is showcased in time-lapse footage, alongside four fashion films recorded live chart the transmutations devised and performed by Alexander McQueen, Erin O’Connor, Katy England and Bobby Gillespie. An image gallery animates Nick Knight's polaroids to reflect the on-set metamorphoses of fashion greats including Lily Cole, Juergen Teller, Judy Blame and Shaun Leane. [more]

In Your Face - December 1st, opening at Bruton Place With just over a week until the opening of our next exhibition, In Your Face, things here at our Bruton Place headquarters are, in a word, humming. Given that the show itself is supposted to be a jolt to the senses, colliding agitprop pieces from the world of fashion, fine art and film, it's been an incredible experience unwrapping all of the pieces as they come in. From Franko B's hand-stiched canvases to Debra Baxter's knuckle dusters, we've been kept on our toes. [more]

CURRENT PUNKATURE - PROCESS FILM


Nick Knight took to the streets with stylist Alister Mackie to shoot Punkature, his editorial for the Winter 2011 issue of AnOther magazine inspired by a provocative fusion of punk and haute couture. Our latest process film, captured during the course of the shoot over summer 2011, documents textile designer David Bradley constructing a one-off, hand-printed chiffon dress backstage during the shot, later modelled by Saskia de Brauw and shot by Nick Knight. FROM THE SHOP PUNKATURE DRESS, 2011


Hand-crafted by textile designer David Bradley backstage during Nick Knight and Alister Mackie's Punkature shoot in June 2011, this unique ball-gown gown is a true one-off. A recent graduate of the Royal College of Art in Textile Design, Bradley's response to the Mackie's initial visual references of mid-eighties shots of musicians Strawberry Switchblade - and the polka-dot trend 'spotted' throughout the Autumn/Winter 2011 collections - was to hand screen-printed fifty meters of fabric with three sizes of dots. This fabric was the basis for this stunning gown, hand-smocked and machine-pleated into multiple layers, and captured on film by Nick Knight modelled by Saskia de Brauw. [more]

A blur of colour, reflection and frantic animation - with Gareth Pugh himself making more than a cameo appearance, styled by Nicola Formichetti - this exclusive fashion film is crafted from archive video recorded on the set of Nick Knight's shoot for the October 2006 issue of i-D. CURRENT FASHION MIX
Our first two fashion mixes are live on site, showcasing the musical choices of two SHOWstudio favourites: supermodel Naomi Campbell and style and fashion director of W magazine Edward Enninful. Each Friday and Monday SHOWstudio will launch a new musical mix devised by a different fashion luminary - including leading models, stylists, designers and photographers. Captured on set during Nick Knight's shoot for the September 2010 issue of Vanity Fair, Lady Gaga is the centrepiece of both fashion film and editorial, attired in an array of custom-crafted couture from fashion's finest, including Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, Armani Privé and Alexander McQueen. COMING UP CAFÉ CONVERSATIONS


A series of intimate tête-à-tête conversations inspired by the themes behind the current SHOWstudio Shop exhibition The Café and streamed live across the Internet, Café Conversations invites fashion and art figures into our Bruton Place space to participate in a project that questions the boundaries between personal discussion and performance art. CURRENT MUSEUM OF COSTUME
Created to accompany the Antwerp Fashion Museum's 2011 exhibition Dreamsuits: Designs by Nudie Cohn, the Rodeo Tailor, photographer and filmmaker Alice Hawkins lends her unique eye to Cohn's equally unique couture creations, capturing their glittering surfaces on fashion film. Drawing outfits from the personal collection of iconic Belgian entertainer Bobbejaan Schoepen and his wife Josée, and featuring Bobbejaan's music as soundtrack, Hawkins' film is inspired by the idea of Cohn's work crossing the line between costume and art. A client and personal friend of Nudie Cohn, Bobbejaan Schoepen's collection of 35 complete stage outfits is the largest in Europe. For Museum of Costume Hawkins brings Schoepen's collection to life on a selection of Nudie Cohn enthusiasts - from Elvis impersonators to musicians, club entrepreneurs and even the photographer herself - immortalising the Rodeo tailor's greatest hits on film. CURRENT PUNKATURE - PROCESS FILM


The inspiration - not to mention blood, sweat and tears - behind Nick Knight's Punkature story for the Autumn/Winter 2011 issue of AnOther magazine is unraveled in the exclusively launched process film. Alongside footage exclusively filmed on set during the three-day shoot, Nick Knight himself narrates the process and evolution behind the editorial story, which includes Alister Mackie's choice of fashions from Yves Saint Laurent, Prada, Rodarte and Alexander McQueen. CURRENT EARTH MAGIC


'There was no script. I simply told people I wanted to film my subconscious.' That is director Joseph Lally's summary of his latest film Earth Magic, an art piece exclusively revealed on SHOWstudio and starring a cast of models and actors including Daphne Guinness, Jamie Bochert, Sebastian Sauvé and Erik Sage. FROM THE SHOP CAFÉ, 2011


British milliner Piers Atkinson's Autumn/Winter 2011 collection, entitled Paris, was inspired by the dark Parisian cafés, showgirls, cabaret, and the alluring appeal of the city itself. Made exclusively for the SHOWstudio Shop, Atkinson placed a new spin on the classic beret, adorning the hats with the word 'Café' - rendered in reflective perspex and glowing neon to evoke those ever-iconic images of la cite de lumiere. The collection is a nod to a thirties Paris with seedy back alleys, lovers on park benches at dusk, and drag queens in late night cabarets. Yet the collection also encompasses the heart of the city, one which draws dreamers, poets, artists, and romantics to the light of Parsian clubs, bars, cafes and theatres, to the heat of its vices and the warmth of its conversations. FROM THE ARCHIVE ONE IN TEN


If breast cancer affects one-in-ten women, why is it invisible in fashion photography? In 2001, Nick Knight and stylist Katy England sought to redress the balance in One In Ten, a shoot starring seven women who have fought breast cancer and won. Captured for Dazed & Confused and featured in the magazine's anniversary exhibition - opening this week at Somerset House - the editorial is here augmented with Alice Rawthorne's interviews with each of the women photographed, and a fashion film created from those and previously unpublished images. COMING UP EARTH MAGIC


The second cinematic collaboration between director Joseph Lally and Daphne Guinness, Earth Magic is an art film for the digital age, contrasting film with still image and text in arresting juxtapositions, and eschewing conventional narrative in favour of aesthetic exploration. Also featuring Jamie Bochert, Sebastian Sauvé and Erik Sage, Earth Magic is released exclusively on SHOWstudio on Monday 31 October 2011.

Regarded as one of England's most influential photographers of the Edwardian era, Emil Hoppe's black and white photographs reveal the realities of the day-to-day life during the era between the wars. Hoppe was able to capture everyday British people, in a fascinating and captivating manner, provoking curiosity along with a sense of nostalgia. [more]


FROM THE ARCHIVE EDITING FASHION


An offshoot from 2005's three-month Moving Fashion project, the fashion film season Editing Fashion shifted the focus of SHOWstudio's exploration of fashion film from direction to the editing process and from fashion figures to established editors - from the fields of commercials, feature film and pornography to name but three - and global SHOWstudio viewers. All were given exclusive footage of John Galliano's Spring/Summer 2006 show, filmed by Nick Knight, to re-work into their own unique edit. CURRENT MONSTER BALL


As part of her Monster Ball world tour in 2009, Lady Gaga asked Nick Knight and Ruth Hogben to create a number of films to use as part of her on-stage performance and as interludes in the epic show. Building film into the architectonic feeling of the Monster Ball tour, these films explore iconic notions of fame, celebrity and life in an evolving metropolis. This week, three new interlude films have been released into the Monster Ball project: 'Intro', 'Toilet So Happy' and 'Tornado', offering Lady Gaga fans the chance to experience the unique visuals of the Monster Ball anew. Drawing from his series Transfigured Past, Franz West's untitled piece gestures at ephemeral recollection. A collage of transitory moments from staged meetings, West composes a visual allusion to encounters with his fellow Vienna Actionists. Acrylic paint and collage activate the composition, creating a scene of intrigue and anticipation. [more]


FROM THE ARCHIVE DRESS ME UP, DRESS ME DOWN


Exploring the idea of control in fashion image-making - shifting control from the image-maker and stylist to the model, and then ultimately to the viewing public themselves - in 2005 Dress Me Up, Dress Me Down offered SHOWstudio viewers the chance to dress Liberty Ross during Nick Knight's live interactive photoshoot. Inspired by live pornographic video chats widely available on the web Ross became the focus of a series of fashion film interactives and imagery, the creation of which was determined by the online audience and Ross herself. These interactive editorial images are accompanied by Liberty Ross' video and picture diaries documenting her experiences on fashion shoots and an interactive comprised of footage shot by Liberty, utilising her own body as a canvas for aesthetic experimentation. The origins of the shoot are mapped out through mood boards that investigated Jonathan Kaye's selection of key seasonal themes, and also a series of essays and personal statements from a variety of voices on the subject of pornography.
