INSIDE/OUT
#########
Here at our Bruton Place headquarters, we’re rupturing the clean black and white aesthetic of the last Shop show with Inside/Out, an exhibition all about the body. Opening to the public on 26 June, you can imagine the sort of visceral palette that’s bouncing across our walls. Corporeal creations from jewellery and fashion designers including Naomi Filmer, Shaun Leane, and Professor Helen Storey literally give us a chance to see inside ourselves, while art stars Dan Colen, Terence Koh, Marilyn Minter, and Ariana Page Russell render physiological reactions larger than life. The body, in other words, seems to be the centre of attention once again in both the art and fashion words. [more]

Think spats are outdated garb reserved for welders and 19th century infantry? Not if Miuccia Prada has anything to do with it. The ever-elegant Mrs Prada sent pretty, girlish spats strutting down the Miu Miu A/W 2010 runway alongside Mary Quant and Twiggy-inspired mini dresses. This week, for our second Miuccia-designed Object Fetish, we delve deeper into this archaic but historically rich shoe accessory. [more]

INSIDE/OUT PREVIEW
#########
Though we can’t give them all away just yet, there are some exciting and even shocking surprises in our upcoming Shop exhibition Inside/Out. From a virginally white dress purposefully 'decorated' with vomit to the European debut of Marilyn Minter’s Green Pink Caviar, we’ve gone Technicolor just in time for summer. And that’s not it. Also on view for the first time: Alister Mackie’s underpants (you may remember those from our 2007 project Boned), a brand-new vertebrae cuff from Shaun Leane and a two-faced, bronze Terence Koh head suspended upside down. So, keep your eyes on the Shop as unexpected items are added in the days to come. But don’t say we didn’t warn you… [more]

OUTSIZE?
#########
19 June 2010 marked the finale of New York’s second annual Full Figured Fashion Week - and, in light of FFFW’s celebration of curves and couture, we are looking back at OUTSIZE?, our own exploration of the relationship between size and fashion. Eight years ago, we challenged twelve of the biggest names in fashion to create designs for full-figured women sizes 16 and above - Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Shaun Leane and Roland Mouret were among those who submitted original designs for the project. Check out OUTSIZE? for couture for all sizes. [more]

Carson McColl performance video now live
When punk-poet Carson McColl took up residence in the LiveStudio to mark the end of the Shop's Blackwhite exhibition, we didn't realise quite how apt it would be. Though his uncompromising and provocative performance certainly wasn't for the faint-hearted, it's the perfect introduction to SHOWstudio Shop's next show, opening to the public this Saturday 26 June, which brings together a range of raw and abjectly beautiful object... Prada - the black sheep of Italian fashion
It's day four of Milan fashion week. Well, it was - a whirlwind morning of re-sees and two major shows back-to-back, now it's all over. Hardly time to post my musing on a decidedly simple and subdued fashion week filled with relaxed tailoring, practical footwear, natty shorts and ever-reliable regulation navy blue... [more]

GWENDOLINE
#########
Last week, photographer and filmmaker Jez Tozer took up residence in our studio with actress Gwendoline Christie to create a video short to celebrate the launch of Bistrotheque’s newest venture, Studio East Dining. Designed by architect Carmody Groarke, the pop-up restaurant sits on the roof of a construction site in Westfield Stratford City – what will later become Europe’s largest shopping mall. Gwendoline dined on a selection of Studio East Dining’s menu, courtesy of Tom Collins, while dressed in the hottest names in London fashion including Gareth Pugh, Giles and Nicolas Kirkwood. Skillfully woven with time-lapse footage of the restaurant's construction, Tozer's film is a mouthwatering fusion of food and fashion - an appetiser, if you will, of the public opening of the restaurant today. The first apparel piece to be included in our Object Fetish collection hails from the A/W 2010 show of Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci - the graphic, geometric sweater, inspired by the seemingly paradoxical sources of alpine and aquatic sports. Opposites, it seems, do attract - a key piece from next season's collections, Tisci's coveted, custom-made piece somehow manages to fuse fashion's current fascinations with the Minimal and Maximal into a single and singular garment. Ripe for analysis, we think. [more]

For A/W 2010, Karl Lagerfeld took his Chanel audience at the Grand Palais in Paris to a Winter Wonderland - complete with polar bears (fake) and icebergs (very real). Faux-fur boots, heavy coats, and fierce tweed suits dominated the runway, while Lagerfeld's sly witticisms could be seen in the accessories, with ice blocks hewn into haute couture clutches. We snagged one for this week's Object Fetish, showcased alongside a sensational beauty concept from ground-breaking manicurist Marian Newman.

KATE 2006
#########
In 2006, guest-editor Giorgio Armani commissioned Nick Knight to shoot the cover of a section of London's Independent newspaper dedicated to the fight against AIDS in Africa.  For the subversive, harrowing portrait, Knight captured Kate Moss in the nude, with little adornment - except for the fact that Moss appears to have been painted black, covering every visible inch of her skin. But appearances, as they say, can be deceiving: not a drop of paint was on Moss.  Knight deepened the colour contrast in the print to achieve his effects.  A call to action for Armani and Knight, this seminal piece took one of the most famous faces in the world and let her represent Africa by declaring solidarity with Africa. Now on view for the first time in our Bruton Place headquarters, the work has the same poignant effect; provoking concern for an issue, a group of people and a pandemic that most of us are as far removed from as Moss is. The World Cup is just peeking around the corner, and there is no better time to look back at Score, Philip Treacy’s debut collaboration with sportswear label UMBRO for A/W 2006. Elaborating on the concept of ‘luxury sportswear,’ Treacy called dancers, gymnasts and Premiership footballer David James to join fashion icons including Linda Evangelista and Grace Jones to participate in a shoot styled by Judy Blame. Paying homage to the multiple camera technique of Eadweard Muybridge, Nick Knight explored the relation between sport and fashion, showcased here in short films and galleries of the live fashion event. How easy is it to ally fashion with the trussed restraint of the sexual tack-shop? According to celebrated art director, graphic designer and agent provocateur Peter Saville, easier than you might expect. Ten years after Madonna laced herself into Gaultier's infamous reclamation of Mainbocher's corset and in the midst of a S/S season dominated by underwear as outerwear from the sublime (check Christopher Kane and Christian Dior) to the ridiculous (the less said about tatty high-street nylon negligees the better), Saville's visual collision of the erotically charged laced corset and the fetishistic extremity of a rope bondage-table is especially fitting. Custom-crafted in virginal white, Saville's strapped-up slab fuses fetish, fashion and the ready-made art object in an aesthetic tradition dating back to Duchamp, and his sardonically-monikered Fountain.
