IN FASHION: SUSANNA LAU
Susanna Lau, also known as Susie Bubble of blog Style Bubble, is the focus of the next installment of our In Fashion series set to launch this Friday 25 February on SHOWstudio.com.  Lau was, undoubtedly, a crucial figure in fashion's blog revolution; she was editor of Dazed Digital, the online presence of Dazed & Confused magazine, from 2008-2010 and is now focusing full-time on her blog and other freelance projects, contributing and collaborating with industry favorites.  This intimate video portrait shows Lau waxing lyrical about all things fashion during a rare slice of down time before she and SHOWstudio.com Fashion Director Alexander Fury were swept into the eye of A/W 2011, covering the Collections for SHOWstudio.com.

Our In Fashion interview with Susanna Lau will be launched this Friday 25 February 2011

SLEEP, 2001
An entire decade ago, SHOWstudio.com founder and internationally renowned fashion photographer Nick Knight, explored the notion of sleep within fashion in a groundbreaking project - appropriately enough, titled Sleep. The first ever live global fashion shoot comprised of nine super models dressed and groomed as they would be at a traditional catwalk show but instead of the runway, they fell straight into bed. SHOWstudio.com viewers logged in and observed the nocturnal dishevelment of slumber. Our current SHOWstudio Shop exhibition To Bed is exclusively showing eight film shorts taken from the Sleep web cam stills – all of which truly document each models’ unconscious fashion performances. TWENTY TO MIDNIGHT, 2011
Showcasing her second Enchanted Doll for the SHOWstudio Shop, Canadian doll-maker Marina Bychkova has created yet another astounding piece for our current exhibition To Bed. The slumbersome porcelain figurine was born from moments of anxiety about wasted time, aging and morality and inspired by the childhood story the Tale of Lost Time. Handmade to the finest standard, Twenty to Midnight features a silver-plated, limited edition bronze casting Rococo wig sculpture with gemstone accents. Embellished further with solitaire Ruby slippers and the permanent engraving of an intricate grandfather clock on her chest, Bychkova's precious doll serves as a constant reminder that time is of the essence. PERFECT
As she takes to the hot seat tomorrow for our latest live In Fashion interview, we re-examine one of Ruth Hogben's editorial films for our A/W 2010 season. Inspired by the much-fêted 'reductionist' sophomore collection by Phoebe Philo for the French house Celine, Hogben's fashion film captures all the elegance and severity of these examples of minimalism at its most luxurious. Austere, strict and refined to the nth degree, Perfect lives up to its title, a superb evocation of Philo's aesthetic at its very purest. [more]

Known primarily for his use of Polaroid photography, Jeremy Kost has long documented the ever-provocative existence of Hollywood glamour, and considering this week centre’s around love and passion, Kost’s Boudoir image ticks all the right boxes. In a crescending mass of polaroids, infamous transgender Amanda Lepore is propped seductively upon a crimson bed leaving little to the imagination. CINEMATOGRAPHY COLLECTION, 2010
#########
Central Saint Martins graduate Maiko Takeda has recently become the one-to-watch after winning the Swarovski Trend Forecast Award. Now exhibiting internationally, her UK debut happily happens to be taking place under the veil of SHOWstudio Shop’s latest show To Bed.  Stemming from her fascination with scientific and mathematical laws that we take for granted - such as shadows and gravity - Takeda's body of work is all about light and dark. In Cinematography Collection, the young artist explores the terrain within the art historical parameters of the classic nude: a frame is, to all intents and purposes, 'empty' but casts a shadow of its subject. One minute we see the seductive figure, the next we can't make out her shadow, the viewer's role as voyeur complicated as the subject of the 'shadowed painting' resists falling into that ever too familiar 'to-be-looked-at' female role. Visit To Bed and unmask Takeda’s compelling piece for yourself… [more]

FUTURE TENSE
#########
Inspired by the boundless talent of Kat Marks, it is confirmed once again that the future is bright - the same thinking that informed our 2008 'Future Tense' fashion film season. Inspired by Hywel Davies' book 100 New Fashion Designers, this project approached a variety of designers with the simple brief to produce films exploring their own creative ethos and their increased sensitivity to their power as a brand. Accompanying films by Pierre Hardy, Rodarte, Peter Jensen, Lutz, Todd Lynn and Henrik Vibskov are intimate Q&As with each participant in addition to essays and features exploring the themes raised by the designers' films and the shift towards moving fashion as seen through the lens of influential young fashion writers.

Miu Miu's fashion film foray - The Powder Room

Miu Miu is an unusual fashion label - initially a secondary line (don't say diffusion) of the Prada powerhouse, it quickly blossomed into it's own distinct entity, with a fan-base as prone to passionate displays of affection as those of its sister label.

That feminine love affair with Miu Miu has now been expanded and expounded into a series of short fashion films, titled 'Women's Tales' and created by female directors: the first, by Zoe Cassavetes, featured above.

TO BED: Private view

Last night, the latest SHOWstudio Shop show, To Bed, opened with a private view here at Bruton Place to showcase the new offerings to a selected group of guests. The work on display runs the gamut, from Jeremy Kost's intimate polaroids, to Maiko Takeda's shadow-casting frame, to Andy Warhol's 'Sleep' - one of Warhol's first video pieces, described as an 'anti-film' and consisting of five hours and twenty minutes of long take footage depicting John Giorno sleeping.
